Our Strategic Plan
The strategy outlines our vision, as well as the objectives and guiding principles that form the core of who we are at AbSec.
quick links
AbSec exists to see Aboriginal children and young people culturally strong, thriving and fulfilling their potential. In order to accomplish this, we recognise that a holistic and comprehensive strategy is the key to achieving lasting change. As we embark on our next strategic phase, our work will continue to build on the foundations laid over the past three years to transform supports for our children and young people, families and communities. This work includes promoting best practices that strengthen and uphold Aboriginal children, young people, families and their communities and forging new targeted partnerships that will propel us to achieve our goals.
Our purpose
AbSec is the peak organisation dedicated to the welfare of Aboriginal children, young people, and families in New South Wales. We advocate for their rights while supporting carers and communities.
Our vision
Our vision is for all Aboriginal children and young people to be looked after in safe, thriving Aboriginal families and communities. We aim to see them raised strong in spirit and identity, with every opportunity for lifelong wellbeing and connection to culture, surrounded by holistic supports.
AbSec Governance
AbSec operates under the guidance of a dedicated Aboriginal governing board, led by an Aboriginal Chief Executive Officer. This structure includes both representatives of Aboriginal organisations and Aboriginal individuals, reflecting our commitment to inclusive and culturally-informed leadership.
The AbSec Board of Directors is responsible for determining strategy and overseeing the implementation of our strategic directions. We work diligently to implement our Strategic Plan through our Annual Business Plans, and we showcase our progress and achievements through our Annual Reports and public communications. This governance model ensures that our mission to support Aboriginal children, young people, families, and communities is always at the forefront of our efforts.

AbSec Strategic Plan 2023-2026
AbSec’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan outlines our commitment to strengthening the welfare of Aboriginal children, young people, and families. Our focus is on ensuring they are supported by quality services, thriving communities, and robust partnerships.
AbSec's strategic directions
Our activities are determined by five strategic directions, with a number of goals cascading under each one. These directions are the backbone of AbSec’s operations, shaping every initiative and guiding our actions within the sector and as a team.
Progress self-determination for Aboriginal children, young people, families and communities
Self-determination is at the heart of sustainable change. We believe that Aboriginal communities possess the innate strengths and abilities to solve their own problems when given the right support and trust. By promoting self-determination, we empower Aboriginal children, young people, and families to lead and control their own solutions, ensuring their voices are at the forefront of decision-making processes.
Grow our Aboriginal community-controlled sector
Strengthening the Aboriginal community-controlled sector is essential for delivering better outcomes. We work to provide the tools and resources needed for Aboriginal-led solutions that are innovative and forward-thinking. By building this sector, we ensure that Aboriginal agencies are equipped to provide optimal care for our children, young people, and their families.
Ensure government hears our voices
Aboriginal voices must be represented in society to drive genuine improvements. We advocate for Aboriginal-led decision-making to ensure that government policies and supports are informed by the perspectives of Aboriginal children, young people, families, and communities. Our goal is to influence policy and ensure it reflects what works best for our people.
Leader in the sector
As a strong Aboriginal child and family peak organisation, we play a pivotal role in building sector capacity and advising governments. Our leadership aims to shape the future of the Aboriginal sector, ensuring it delivers quality services to our children, young people, families, communities, carers, and people with disabilities.
Maintain a strong AbSec
Our commitment to delivering better outcomes is driven by our robust governance, dedicated people, and adherence to our values and vision. By ensuring our organisation is well-resourced and true to its principles, we are positioned to effectively represent and serve our Aboriginal children, young people, families, and communities.
