Our Sector

Understanding the role we play within the child, family and community care sector.

Understanding our role in the sector

AbSec is deeply committed to empowering Aboriginal communities through robust support of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs). These organisations are pivotal in ensuring that services for Aboriginal children, families, and communities are delivered in a manner that is culturally appropriate and community-driven. Here’s a closer look at what we do within the child, family and community care sector and how we assist those also operating within it.

Criteria for Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations (ACCOs)

As per the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, and ACCO is defined as:

A growing sector

The NSW Government has committed to transitioning Aboriginal children in out-of-home care to Aboriginal agencies. However, the increasing number of children and young people in care means our sector needs to expand. This expansion focuses not only on providing support for Aboriginal children and young people in care but also on prevention, restoration, and early intervention to reduce the number of children and young people coming into or staying in care long-term, where possible.

Our commitment to ACCOs

AbSec advocates for Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations delivering services for our children, young people, families, and communities. We lead the design and development of policies and strategies on issues impacting Aboriginal families and communities. Our sector support initiatives are designed to foster a strong, capable network of ACCOs.

Policy and Strategy Development

Lobbying government

We actively engage with government bodies to influence policies and decisions that affect Aboriginal children and families.

Building organisational capacity

We provide support to ACCOs to enhance their capacity, ensuring they can deliver high-quality, sustainable services.

Embedding best practices

We work to embed sustainability and accountability into everyday best practices for ACCOs.

Sector support initiatives

Training, development and resources

Offering comprehensive training programs, as well as supplying resources and tools, to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff within ACCOs.

Networking opportunities

Creating opportunities for ACCOs to connect, share experiences, and collaborate on common goals.

Advocacy and representation

Representing the interests of ACCOs in discussions with government and other stakeholders to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met.

Our vision for the future

AbSec envisions a future where there is a strong emphasis on preventing children from entering the out-of-home care system through early intervention and family support programs. We see robust restoration services in place to reunite children in care with their families whenever it is safe and possible. The sector continues to grow sustainably, with ACCOs receiving the support they need to build their capacity and resilience. Ultimately, we wish to see that Aboriginal communities are empowered to lead and deliver services that meet their unique cultural and community needs.
