Our NAIDOC Week celebration is now less than two weeks away, and we are ready to announce the line-up for the day, including musical and cultural performers, all the exciting activities, the special guests, the food and much more!
The AbSec NAIDOC Family Fun Day is an event for not only Aboriginal communities but also Australians from all walks of life to come together, connect and learn about Aboriginal culture. It will be held on Tuesday 6 July at Steel Park in Marrickville and be a day for the whole family to join together during the school holidays and enjoy food, entertainment and heaps of fun activities. We will be hosting a number of special guests on the day, such as the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Linda Burney MP and the NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Hon. Don Harwin MLC.
PERFORMERS
There will be numerous talented First Nations performers for the whole family, including Australian world music star Mitch Tambo and country music sensation Jarrod Hickling. As well as these stars, there will also be DJ sets, didgeridoo sessions and performances from local talent like Brolga Aboriginal Dance Academy and the Kinchela Boys Home singers. Koori Radio will also be running a live stream of the day.
ACTIVITIES
The kids will be guaranteed endless entertainment with all of the fun activities planned for the day. There will be Johnny cake making, Ngumpie Weaving workshop, inflatables and rides, a soccer activity run by Western Sydney Wanderers, boomerang and clapstick painting, a petting zoo, face painting, an art workshop, sausage sizzle and much more.
First Nations businesses from around NSW, as well as local businesses, have been invited to showcase their talent and incredible products, from food to clothes and jewellery, which will all be available for sale. A number of organisations that work across the child and family sector will also have stalls at the event with information, advice and support.
We will be celebrating this year’s NAIDOC theme: Heal Country! A call for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration and destruction. There are walking tours available, hosted by local Elders that will engage with an Aboriginal perspective of the local landscape along the Cooks River.
